"In the Gulf of Mexico, Tropical Depression 5 may finally be intensifying. The latest information, not available until after the 10 a.m. forecasts were issued indicates that the depression is nearing tropical storm status. Flight level winds over 50 mph were found. If these trends continue, this system will soon become a tropical storm. In any event, the environment remains favorable for intensification and the system should strike south Texas tomorrow morning at least as a moderate tropical storm. The greatest threat will be the heavy rainfall. Up to 15 inches of rain can be expected where the system makes landfall and for areas to the north as most of the rain is north of the center. In the tropical Atlantic, Dean continues to intensify. Maximum sustained winds are now near 60 mph. Conditions appear favorable for intensification; therefore, Dean is expected to reach hurricane status within the next 24-36 hours. Dean, now located about 900 miles east of Barbados is likely to reach the Lesser Antilles on Friday morning or early afternoon. While this decreases the amount of preparation time, this may prevent the amount of intensification that will occur before striking the islands. However, Dean has the potential to rapidly intensify before reaching the islands and could strike as a dangerous category 2 or 3 hurricane, which is capable of causing extensive damage. Long term, the models are starting to trend a little more to the west than before. However, it remains far too soon to speculate whether this will impact the Pensacola region. Keep checking back during the next few days for the latest information on Dean". Pensacola-news-journal
