Global Cooling Continues for May 2008 June 2, 2008 May 2008 Was Another Cold Month By Joseph DAleo, CCM For more than 75% of the nation, May was cooler than normal, as much as 6F below in the far North Central. may_2008.jpg This is in sharp contrast to May 2007 which was warm in the same areas it was cold this year. May 2007 was the 11th warmest May for the US. may_2007_thumb.jpg We will see in a few days where this May ranks. Clearly it will be colder than normal. UAH MSU daily data suggests the global average will be well below last year as well. Stay tuned for official updates. That should continue the downslide we have seen starting in 2002 which accelerated the last year with the Pacific cooling and La Nina. Meanwhile Antarctic ice remains at 1 million square kilometers ahead of last year at this time and ahead of the average since 1979. If it stays at this anomaly, we will surpass the record set late last winter there. The arctic ice is similar to late May at this time after recovering nicely this past winter from record low levels in September and October. Only time will tell whether the same flow patterns will develop in June that developed last year to rapidly diminish the ice. See more here. -

2007-08 Ski Season a Record Breaker in the U.S. News - Resorts San Francisco, CA - Ski areas across the U.S. tallied 60.1 million visits for the 2007-08 ski and snowboard season, making it the best season on record according to preliminary estimates released Thursday at the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) convention and trade show being held this week in San Francisco. The new record represents a 9.1 percent increase from the 55.1 million visits recorded in 2006-07, and a 2.0 percent rise from the prior record of 58.9 million visits set in 2005-06. All regions of the U.S. and resorts of all size categories contributed to the record season. The Northeast realized a 19.3 percent gain over last season, the Midwest rose by 12.3 percent, and the Pacific West improved by 10.0 percent. The Southeast gained a more moderate 6.5 percent and the Rocky Mountains, which set a record in 2006-07, topped that record this season by 2.3 percent. Over the past 10 seasons, 1998-99 to 2007-08, the average number of visits recorded nationally was 56.16 million. The 2007-08 season represents a 7.0 percent increase from this 10-year average. By region, the Northeast was up 9.0 percent from its 10-year average of 12.91 million visits, tallying 14.07 million visits this season. The Midwest, with 8.09 million visits, was up 10.1 percent, the Rockies were up 9.9 percent with 21.33 million visits, the Pacific West was up 1.4 percent with 11.37 million visits and the Southeast was down 1.3 percent with 5.21 million visits in 2007-08. The study cites strong increases in snowfall as a contributor to the record season. Snowfall in the Pacific West was up 62 percent, up 39 percent in the Rocky Mountains, up 35 percent in the Midwest, and up 26 percent in the Northeast. Only the Southeast reported a decrease, down 7 percent. A final report will be issued by the NSAA in July. -

Freak snowfall in Sweden By Olafur Kr. Olafsson on May 23, 2008 in Countries, General, MBL, Sweden Snow in SwedenA cold snap has caused confusion in Sweden, as heavy snow fell on northern parts of the country on Saturday. According to reports in The Local, weather forecasts predict the freak storm will bring the seasons last snow. Residents, geared up for spring, were not expecting the large amount of snow, which caused large-scale power cuts. Evelyn Nykvist in Sorskog told a local news agency: I am just heading out to shovel the snow, its feels a little tough. I measured this morning and 24 centimetres of snow had fallen during the morning. The storm affected most of Dalarna as well as inner Halsingland, Harjedalen, Jamtland and the Are ski resorts. The meteorological agency of Sweden, SMHI reported 14 to 15 centimetres of snowfall in Leksand, Malung and Rattvik in Dalarna. Sten Laurin, a meteorologist for SMHI said: It has snowed quite a lot, as far south as parts of Varmland. Further south than that the snow turns into slush. Residents in the affected areas were out on the streets on their bicycles the day before the storm and were left scrambling to locate their cold weather clothes the day after the unexpected snowfall. Several cars were unable to handle the winter driving conditions in the Falun-Borlange area, most likely a result of having already removed their winter tyres. -

OURAY COUNTY Jeep tourism in Ouray County is facing delays as the countys road and bridge department plows through overwhelming amounts of snow on the areas most popular trails. Were still in our beginning stages, said Chris Miller, Ouray County road and bridge superintendent. The five-man team has numerous roads to open in Ouray County and jeep tours, a major tourist industry in Ouray, can only wait. Those trails consist of Yankee Boy Basin, Red Mountain Town, Corkscrew, Brown Mountain, Engineer Pass and Imogene Pass. However, deep snow is making progress slow and the team is several weeks behind. Ouray County Road and Bridge Superintendent Chris Miller walks through a plowed section of Yankee Boy Road Wednesday morning. "As we open the roads the people get in right behind us," Miller said. "They don't waste no time." (Barton Glasser / Daily Press) (Use arrows above to view more photos) Advertisement The department started plowing Yankee Boy on May 5. The usual 10-day plowing project is already weeks behind, but Miller was hoping to finish there yesterday and move onto Red Mountain Town at the top of Red Mountain Pass. Were just going to have to bail right back in, he said. In a normal year, Yankee Boy usually has 2 to 3 feet on the road and is easy to work, he said. But this is no normal year, and where the crew started plowing, the road was covered with more than 8 feet and it only got deeper. Also hindering progress were several snowslides that havent run in almost a century. They brought down 100-year-old trees ... all twisted up, Miller said. He said the slides took several 10-hour days to move. The jeep traffic can now get up to the last Forest Service campground, where the crew traditionally stops plowing. The clearing of the road has been a relief for Ourays tour businesses. Its affecting us a little bit, but were are still doing half-day trips, said Bob Burdick, owner of Colorado West Jeep Rentals and Tours. Burdick has been with Colorado West for 25 years and has never seen this much snow before. He also owns a sleigh ride business in Telluride. However, he was unable to open that business this winter there was too much snow for his horses and sleigh to track through. To help the projects move along, the local jeep businesses pay their workers to be spotters for the crew. They move a jeep along behind the Caterpillar D5 Dozer and watch for any dangerous situations, such as avalanches, Miller said. Though the snow is more than 15 feet deep in many places, he said removing it is still one of the best jobs in the county. You couldnt ask for a better office, he said. Because there are not many markers on the roads, the crew works from memory. They figure about where the road is and work their way down, he said. From Red Mountain Town, which Miller said will take about four days, the crew will move onto Corkscrew and Brown Mountain. Both are about a five- to eight-mile stretch with 2 to 3 feet of snow on the road. Another project is the countys entrance to Silverjack Reservoir. It is Forest Service land, but Miller said hes got clearance to plow. However, he needs to find the time and must have the right conditions. Currently, visitor scan only get to the first campground from the Cimarron area entrance, he said. He hopes he can get the Ridgway road cleared sometime in the next two weeks. The end of the departments projects will take the crew to Engineer and Imogene passes. Engineer, Miller said, is fairly easy, but Imogene is one of the hardest projects of the summer. There is no help from the sun as most of the road is in the shade. Right now, he said, there is no way to even get down to the area. Last year the crew finished up around July 2, with a goal to have the jeep trails open by the Fourth of July weekend. However, this year is looking grim. Miller said he hopes they can have the areas ready by late July, but the projects could take them into August. Right now the crew is working two employees with one dozer, but the county might rent another to move things along quicker, Miller said.

What Global Warming? Another great commentary by Philip Brennan _____________________________ . 28 May 08 - The planet is heating up as a result of global warming and mankind is facing disaster unless we take on Mother Nature and frustrate her plans to barbecue us all. How do we know that? Well Al Gore tells us so, and we must pay heed to his warnings because he is a towering figure in climatology, recognized as such by the Nobel Peace Prize committee which awarded him their coveted Nobel Peace Prize, and Hollywood which gave him an Oscar for his doomsday film, "An Inconvenient Truth." Oh that Al Gore! The allegedly credible Al Gore. Not the real Al Gore who assured us that he invented the Internet. Not the Al Gore whose Oscar winning film was riddled with errors and used film of melting glaciers lifted from a movie where the chunks of glacial ice falling into the sea were really plastic foam made to look like ice. Not that Al Gore who insists that the science is settled, that the great majority of scientists believe in global warming and only a tiny handful of scientists who he says probably also believe that the earth is flat, dispute the reality of global warming - this in the face of the 31,000 plus scientists who have signed statements that declared his theory humbug. That Al Gore. Face it, Global Warming is a gigantic hoax being used to justify the imposition of some of the most Draconian measures imaginable to combat a menace that does not exist. Developed nations around the world are enacting or hoping to enact legislation that will destroy their economies and doom third world nations to starvation. All in the name of fighting a non-existent threat. There ain't no global warming!" Got it? And if you think this year was cold, just wait until next year. Rabaul Volcano, on the northeastern tip of the island of New Britain (the largest island in the Bismarck Archipelago of Papua New Guinea), released a plume on May 20, 2008. The MODIS on the Aqua satellite captured this image the same day. In this image, the plume is slightly darker and thinner than the opaque white clouds that hover nearby. The relatively dark color suggests a component of volcanic ash along with water vapor. The plume blows in a counter-clockwise arc, away from the island and over the ocean. Rabaul is a pyroclastic shield volcano. Shield volcanoes resemble ancient warrior shields, thanks to their low, broad shape. Assembled from pyroclastic flows (avalanches of broken rocks, volcanic ash, and other materials), these volcanoes bear the scars of earlier eruptions. Rabaulâs explosive 1994 eruption, occurring at the same time as eruptions of two neighboring volcanoes, forced the temporary evacuation of Rabaul City. Before that, Rabaul City had used the sheltered harbor formed by the volcano. -

Ecuador records 125 explosions of Tungurahua volcano www.chinaview.cn 2008-05-26 12:20:55 Print QUITO, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador recorded 125 moderate explosions of the Tungurahua volcano in center of the Andes Sunday, according to the Geophysics Institute (GI) of the National Polytechnic School. "The volcanic activities continue with a high seismic level, mainly characterized by moderate explosions," the IG reported. There are also 32 earthquakes inside the mountain and continuous shocks for 17 times. The ash emissions have caused an ash rain in Pillate and Guadalupe near the volcano. At the same time, those emissions have formed 3-km-high clouds. Tungurahua volcano is 5,029 meters high and located about 135 km south from Quito. The volcano began its current eruptive process in November 1999 and since then has alternatively frequent activities or calmness. -

Indonesia has raised the alert level of one of the most active volcanoes on Java, a volcanology official said on Thursday. The volcanology agency in Bandung raised the alert on Semeru mountain near Malang in East Java late on Wednesday after it shot out some 500-800 degree Celsius clouds, the official said. "The heat clouds slid three kilometres from the crater but no evacuation is needed because people live quite far from the crater," Surono, head of the agency, said. People have been told to stay at least four kilometres from the 3,676 metre-high mountain, which is also popular among hikers. Seven people were killed from the mountain's heat clouds in 1994. The volcanic dust from Semeru has not yet disturbed flights in the nearest town of Surabaya because it is only 600 metres from the mountain's top. Mt. Semeru is the highest mountain on Java and one of the highest in Indonesia. It is also one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, belching clouds and steam just about every day. Indonesia has the nighest number of active volcanoes of any country, sitting on a belt of intense seismic activity known as the "Pacific Ring of Fire". People often live and farm on the slopes of volcanoes because of the rich volcanic soil. -
