Tornado warning for

r.M. Of Stanley including Winkler and Morden continued

 

At 9:00 PM CDT storm spotters have reported a large tornado up to

half a kilometer wide 15 km east of Pilot Mound moving southeastward.

This is a dangerous situation, take cover now. Large hail, flooding

downpours, intense lightning and powerful winds will accompany some

of these storms.

 

Reports of damage to a residence and downed power lines along highway

34 near wood bay road.

 

This is a warning that severe thunderstorms with tornadoes are

imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions.

Take immediate safety precautions.

Severe thunderstorm warning for

r.M. Of Roland including Roland, Jordan and Myrtle issued

 

At 9:25 PM CDT radar shows a series of strong thunderstorms

South of the transcanada highway along the Manitoba

Escarpment. These thunderstorms are moving slowly

Eastward. A large tornado was reported earlier in the Pilot Mound

area as well there have been numerous reports of large hail heavy

downpours and gusty winds.

Massive tornado hits farm

Turned into disaster zone

PILOT MOUND, MAN. -- A series of tornadoes cut a wide swath through the province Saturday night, including one mammoth twister that left only rubble where houses and farm buildings once stood.

 

Probably the hardest hit was Pilot Mound resident Robin McKay, who was still about an hour away from home when the worst of the tornadoes, an estimated half-kilometre in width, turned his farm into a disaster zone.

 

While on the road, he received a call from relatives telling him his property had been levelled.

 

"They said it was gone -- nothing left," a weary-looking McKay said yesterday, while surveying the damage from the concrete foundation where his home had stood.

 

'DIDN'T WASTE ANY TIME'

 

"The mobile trailer, my shop, the barn, nine bins, the chicken coop, the cattle shed, the lumber shed ... basically the only thing that's left is the old house, and we don't use that because it's 100 years old."

 

McKay never got to see the tornado that caused all the damage, but his aunt, who lives less than two km away, had a front row seat.

 

"It was just this great big tornado, coming right through the fields towards our home," said Tracy McKay, whose home did not sustain any significant damage. "And so black -- as black as black can be. We didn't waste any time. We just headed right for the basement."

 

A few kilometres to the east, Andrew Klassen and his family were also cleaning up what was left of their farm yesterday.

 

Klassen lost two stock shelters, a calving barn, a workshop, a tool storage shed, two machine sheds and a number of vehicles to the storm, which was accompanied in most regions by large, golf ball-sized hailstones.

 

"It's just a disaster, there's metal strewn around for miles," Klassen said. "It's hard on a person ... with tree damage like that, I'm wondering if I should just quit farming altogether."

 

Klassen was at home with his wife, his son and some of his son's friends when the twister hit.

 

"We saw the clouds churning ... and I bent down and looked underneath the cloud cover and saw a solid pillar of black," he said.

 

McKay and Klassen said they'd heard of others properties sustaining damage, but neither had heard of anyone being injured.

 

Ominous clouds hung over the region for much of yesterday, and smaller funnel clouds were spotted touching down around Winnipeg, including near Landmark, Lorette, and Dugald. Two tornadoes touched down around Dominion City in less than 24 hours.

 

The first one on Saturday evening and the second yesterday afternoon shortly after 2 p.m. about 10 km southeast of Dominion City.

 

"It did strike one family farmyard. Most everything in the yard was blown about but there was no damage to the house," said Emergency Measures Organization spokesman Don Brennan.
